This month sees two films touring around Leitrim

Gasland - The Movie for Drumshanbo

Drumshanbo is the venue for the first Irish screening of the Academy Award nominated documentary film Gasland. Highlighting the environmental effects of Shale Gas exploitation in the United States, in particular the drilling method known as Fracking, the film will be of particular interest to Leitrim audiences. The Lough Allen Basin which covers Leitrim, parts of Cavan Fermanagh, South Donegal and Sligo has been identified as being rich in Shale Gas deposits. A combination of rising oil prices and new drilling methods such as those used across the United States are being cited as reasons making the Leitrim gas deposits more viable. The issue has been a source of much debate in the US, most recently in an April cover story in the reputable Time Magazine.

Homeland
Johnny Gogan profiles the esoteric community of returned emigrants and more recent immigrants who have helped form the unique character of Leitrim - Ireland’s Cinderella county. The documentary is Leitrim through and through both sides of the camera with some of the county's musical and film-making talent contributing to the production - a musical score from Padraig Meehan assisted by Ray Coen and Tom Jameson, editing and sound from Patrick O'Rourke, closing song from Glenn Garrett and Perry Blake and from across the county boundary Cavan cinematographer Nuria Roldos.

Interviewees include Michael Gallagher who challenged the State in the Supreme Court in 1982 and won; The King Family who featured in a landmark 1967 Documentary about Leitrim; Pete Kern "the first German in Dromahair"; Hans Wieland who helped start Leitrim's Organic Centre; and representing the county's internal migrants Rossa ÓSnodaigh who came up with the idea for Manorhamilton's Gaelscoil and Anna Conlan who won an all Ireland football medal with Leitrim.
