Crossing Borders on Screen - Position Available

Cinema North West are pleased to announce a brand new programme

Crossing Borders On Screen – Cinema Serving Our Communities

With funding from the International Fund for Ireland we have initiated a film-in-the-community programme with three specific community groups in North Leitrim, West Cavan and Fermanagh. More details will be forthcoming as we progress towards our project launch.

In the meantime we are seeking to employ a Programme Director to come and take Cinema North West and this exciting programme forward over the next two years. Full details on the position are here.

Postponement - Made In Sligo

We're very sorry but we've had to postpone Made in Sligo at the very last minute. The cinema faced too many difficulties getting to Sligo, given the continuing weather conditions which made driving conditions, especially for a vehicle of that scale, too hazardous.

We're disappointed for sure, but equally positive that we will be back with revised dates shortly.

Made In Sligo - A Festival celebrating Sligo film

Cinema North West are proud to present Made In Sligo, a follow up to our successful Made in Leitrim festival last year. This year we focus on Sligo's filmmakers and the films made here. With a programme which covers feature films (Mapmaker, Waveriders, 32A, Swansong) documentaries (Tell Me Captain Strange) as well as extensive Shorts and Community programmes, there's sure to be lots to enjoy.

We include the little seen Coney Island Baby as well as the local production 3.10 to Claremorris straight after it's world premiere in Tubbercurry. On top of that we have firm family favourites such as ET-The Extraterrestrial and the original Miracle on 34th Street, just to get you in the Christmas mood. (Okay, those two weren't made in Sligo, but we do like them.)

Check out the full programme on the Made in Sligo page and be sure to drop by. And don't forget, one low price for all tickets, five euro.

Another Adaptation in the can...

Yet another Adaptation Festival under our belts here. Well done to Johnny Gogan of Cinema North West and Sunniva O'Flynn and Aoife Coughlan in the IFI for sourcing and arranging such marvellous material.

A few snaps of Eugene McCabe, our featured writer, this year. Thanks again to all our visitors, it makes such a difference when we get to meet and chat with all of you.

The weekend's press - Martin and Jodie

Yes, more great profiles of the universally praised cast in Swansong, a lovely in depth profile of Jodie Whittaker in the Sunday Business Post and also another two page profile in the Irish Times.

Another profile of Martin in the Sunday Independent.

The Irish Times also praised the film - "McDermottroe’s yarn does exert a firm grip. Credit must go to the actors who breathe life into broadly drawn characters. Jodie Whittaker appears a decade older than her true age as Occi’s mother. Gerard McSorley is reliably seedy as his grandfather. And Martin McCann...buzzes with cross-wired energy as the title character."

Swansong gets ★★★★★ review

Great responses all round to Swansong, especially the performances, in the reviews coming in:

RTE gave a five star review - ★★★★★ "McDermottroe shows himself to be a filmmaker of real promise who can move from heart-warming to chilling and depict the remedial influence of relationships and cruelty towards the weakest with equal power"

and also "One of the real treats of cinema is experiencing a performance by a young, relatively unknown actor or actress and then thinking of the great career they have ahead of them. There are goose bumps aplenty watching Belfast man Martin McCann in 'Swansong.'"

Other reviewers have also praised the film

Breaking News - "Great performances in Swansong"

entertainment.ie - "performances that will last long in the memory, McCann's confident swagger keeps the film burning"

Conor McDermottroe to launch Swansong in Dublin

Our friends, the Light House Cinema, in Smithfield in Dublin is the fabulous venue which will screen Swansong. Conor McDermottroe will be there after the screening on Friday 10th at 6:30 to answer questions and discuss the film.

Conor then travels to Tubbercurry on Saturday 11th. The North Wests first stop on the tour by Cinema North West, to introduce the film to the town which saw it being made. Should be a great night!
